”I usually do some research before projects just to get into the headspace but with over 50 arthropods this one was truly a learning experience. See how I’m trying to say arthropod instead of “bug.” (For the record, Phylum -Arthropoda, Class - Insecta, Order - Bug? I think 🤷 art degree )
They exist in every nook of life which made it a really fun challenge trying to showcase even this fraction. If I were to pull from my own imagination most wouldn’t come close to the amazing diversity of real life. The patterns alone can seem surreal and the range of variation between single species is unbelievable. One of the best parts of painting is putting the little glimmer in eyes and with this I got to do that like five hundred times...After things were blocked in, I’ve never had so many moments looking at references thinking “What in the actual F??? Is that a tricep?? Where the hell does that connect? How many knees??” (cont)
“There’s still plenty in this belonging to the Bob-Rossia Phylum and Order Imagineacea I mean if I was really going for realism this would probably be more of an orgy/bloodbath tbh… As MBHI cements itself as a hub in the field with this space I’ve been mentally preparing myself for all the corrections from experts and bug-obsessed 7 year olds I’m sure to receive.
Working with the staff we made a list of potentials + a few personal faves… I had to pay homage to giant bug B-movies and the weevil… Who, without, I wouldn’t be in the place I am today still pursuing art.
Most artists have a slew of odd jobs in their wake. For a few years I’d spend the hottest summer days catching weevils for a family biz that sold them as herbicide alternatives for knapweed. I was paid by the bug and a great day was nothing to squawk at. They are also just the cutest imo, very chill, just munching away in the sun. “ (Cont)
“ It’s impossible to observe the insect world and not find an endless well. From how they communicate, the amazing forms and colors or just their role in our own existence. I have many fond bug memories and my only hope is this one helps inspire the next gen of bug lovers.
So much love, pride and gratitude to MBHI “
