“Some progress shots of this femme fatale(?) before she moved to Florabella. When we were first in the empty space thinking about ties between Italy and the Montana, almost immediately I was on one about spaghetti westerns. Classic pulp covers and posters are probably some of my favorite forms of art. The subject matter always seems like it’s about to give the plot away and the speed that they were turned out often has a looseness and little goofs in pockets that can be really hard to emulate. I wanted to make pieces for the space that felt like old billboards and ads someone found stacked in the rafters of a dusty barn in some countryside between here and Sergio Leone’s home.
Also somewhat early in this one I tried some weird new drip paints and a dustpan in an attempt sort of just to see what would happen… which had horrible results lol. There’s a certain size of a painting where you just can’t create authentic abstract expressionism kind of moves, paint can’t spread as evenly as it can when things are a little smaller. It definitely is one of those “standing at the top of the cliff before you jump” sort of feelings which is fun for art, until you realize you’ve totally fucked up… But that’s why painting is great because you can always paint over and try something else. “
The pig came as a result of thinking about how strange so many deli meat labels and logos are, hence the drunk pig riding a wheel of cheese on a tightrope, duh.
Also designed their logo as seen posing after a few during the opening…
